Vmware Guest System has no internet connectivity with NAT

February 12th, 2010

The last days I encountered an really strange behaviour in my virtual Ubuntu Linux Box. My host System is a windows vista system. The problem was I could ping any host and e.g. FTP was still working. DNS was’nt a problem either. But anything that was going to use a http connection (port 80) was hanging. So no wget, no netcat, no telnet, no apt-get update/install was working anymore. I got crazy with this “bug”.

When you use bridged networking there is no problem at all, but this is not the setup I prefer. What else could I do? I disabled the Windows firewall and Windows Defender service but that didn’t work at all. I reinstalled vmware server, but this didn’t help either.

Finally I found the solution! I’m using Avira Antivir anti virus software. There was a update lately and since then the “web guard” module is causing this problem! If I disable the webguard module, I can use wget and anything else as usual and it’s working nice again.

I hope to safe some people from getting mad for hours with this post.
